Conversation about Forgetfulness…

Published on 15 April 2025 at 20:49

Recently, I went to a workshop hosted by Wisconsin’s Office of Deaf & Hard of Hearing Service. They did a marvelous job; they did a performance on dementia called “Fortune Cookie” inspired by Remember Project. There are so many things I can share… There is one thing that jumped out for me personally and this is that we ALL forgot.

We forgot to store car insurance in the vehicle in case the police pulled us over.
We forgot to say good morning and I love you when we leave for work.
We forgot the name of our 1st grade teacher.
We forgot our dad’s birthday.
We forgot to complete the school assignment which is due on the next day.
We forgot our own birthday.
We forgot some items on our food list.
We forgot to withdraw some cash for a restaurant that accepts cash only.
We forgot ourselves sometimes
We forgot that our children are the priority over television.
We forgot our social security number.
We forgot today is Saturday, meaning no school.
We forgot today is Monday, meaning back to work.
We forgot to turn off the coffee maker.
We forgot to turn on the oven.
We forgot to put ice cream back in the freezer.
We forgot to put ice cream back in the freezer instead of the refrigerator.
We forgot to buy a new shoe for our children.
We forgot to bring our Bible to church.
We forgot to take a moment to answer a nature call.
We forgot to exercise.
We forgot to not eat sugary junk.
We forgot where we were supposed to go.
We forgot to bring salad to the salad club.
We forgot to read a book for the book club.
We forgot to buy fabric for the quilt club.
We forgot that we have too many clubs.

Basically… we forgot something. And it is okay. It is normal.

Sometimes… just sometimes… We need some extra help with time management, organization skill, or memorization. Or whatever else we may need. And THAT is still OKAY. Sometimes it is a lack of motivation. Lack of purpose. Lack of sparks. It happens.

Yes… being forgetful bothers us at some level. If so, let’s talk.
